Today at CES, AMD is showcasing its upcoming generation of GPUs, built on the latest RDNA 4 architecture and featuring AI-powered FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) upscaling. The Radeon RX 9070 XT and Radeon RX 9070 will be available in Q1 from various video card manufacturers, although specific details on specifications, pricing, and exact release dates remain undisclosed.
The announcement is light on specifics, but AMD has highlighted several key improvements. The RDNA 4 architecture has been developed from the ground up to deliver a significant boost in AI capabilities. This includes optimized compute units, an enhanced ray-tracing engine, better performance, and improved media encoding quality. Built on a 4nm process, the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 will feature AMD’s second-generation AI accelerators, third-generation ray-tracing accelerators, and second-generation radiance display engine.
Limited Details on RDNA 4 Architecture
AMD has provided limited information on its RDNA 4 architecture. The new architecture enables the launch of FSR 4, a machine-learning-powered update to AMD’s upscaling and frame-generation technology, designed specifically for RDNA 4’s dedicated AI accelerator hardware. Currently, FSR 4 will be exclusive to the Radeon RX 9070-series GPUs and will be supported in games with FSR 3.1 already integrated.
Keynote Highlights
During AMD’s CES keynote, Matt Booty, president of game content and studios at Microsoft, confirmed that FSR 4 would be available in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 later this year.
Competitive Position and Future Outlook
AMD has not revealed how FSR 4 compares to Nvidia’s DLSS technology or what performance and image quality improvements to expect. Performance comparisons for the RX 9070 series against competitors are also unclear. However, a branding slide suggests that the 9070 series may offer similar performance to Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4070 Ti and RTX 4070 Super. Nvidia is anticipated to announce its RTX 50-series GPUs later today.
AI-Powered Features in Adrenalin Software
In addition to the new GPUs, AMD is introducing AI-powered features to its Adrenalin software, including image generation with AI models, document summarization, and an AMD chatbot for graphics settings queries.
AMD has skipped the Radeon 8000 series branding for its desktop GPUs, reserving it for RDNA 3.5 mobile GPUs. More details on FSR 4 and RDNA 4 GPUs will be shared ahead of their Q1 launch.
